Objectives
Instructional Objective: Students will be able to
correctly and independently perform the following actions when reading
the Diary of Opal Whiteley: open a notetaking application, size and
position the notetaking application, move text into the application,
move pictures into the application, and save links..

[Note: This lesson will teach students how to cut and paste materials
from Opal's diary into notetaking application. The application referred
to in this plan is Inspiration. however, the procedures demonstrated
here will also work with most word processing and outlining applications.
]
- Today we are going to learn how to take words and pictures
right out of Opal's diary and put them in another document on your
computer. This is called working with multiple documents. Remember
from our last lesson that multiple means "more than one".
- Find the Inspiration icon on your computer. Double click
the icon. [Students perform task.] Now open your browsers and go to
OpalÕs diary. [Students perform task.]
- We are going to be going back and forth between Inspiration
and your browser, so listen carefully.
- Go to the "Picture Book" page in Opal's diary. [Students
perform task.] Go down the page until you come to the part that says,
"Read about Opal's many pets". Raise your hand when you see this section.
[Check and assist.] Click the link for William Shakespeare. You should
now be on a page with a picture of a horse.
- Go to the paragraph just below the picture. [Students perform
task.] Move your mouse so the arrow is just to the left of the first
word of the paragraph. The word you are looking for is "These". [Students
perform task.]
- Push you mouse button and hold it down. Move your mouse
to the right, across the paragraph. Move to the last word in the paragraph.
The word is "gentle". The entire paragraph should now be surrounded
by blue. Raise your hand if that's what you see. [Check and assist.]
- Now find the word "Edit" at the top of your computer screen.
Raise your hand when you see it. [Check and assist.] Move your mouse
so the arrow is over the word "Edit". Hold the mouse button down and
move the arrow to the word "copy". Then let go of the button. [Students
perform task.]
- Now we are going to go to the Inspiration document. Do
this by moving your mouse so the arrow is over the Inspiration window
and click the button once. [Students perform task.] You should now
have the inspiration window on your screen,. Raise your hand if you
do. [Check and assist.]
- Now go back to the word "Edit" at the top of your screen.
Click and hold your mouse button. In the window that appears move
your arrow to the word "Paste". Let go of the mouse button. What happened
in your Inspiration document? [Target answer: The paragraph from the
website appeared in the Inspiration document.]
- Now it's your turn. Go back to the "Picture Book" page.
Follow some of the links to other pages. Copy the description of each
picture and paste it in your Inspiration document.
[Students work independently while teacher monitors and assists. Each
student should generate 3 or 4 examples. ]
- Now we are going to do something fun. Go back to the "Picture
Book" page and go to the William Shakespeare link. Click the link.
[Students perform task.] Copy the description just as we did a few
minutes ago. [Students perform task.]
- Now go back to your inspiration document. Close the window
that is there. You will get a small window asking you if you want
to save it. Click the "No" button. [Students perform task.] Now go
to the word "File" at the top of your screen. click and hold your
mouse button. Move the arrow to the word "New" and let go. You should
have a brand new Inspiration document on your screen. Raise your hand
if you do. [check and assist.]
- Click the button that says "Outline" in the Inspiration
window. [Students perform task.]
- Now paste the paragraph you copied in the Inspiration document.
[Students perform task.]
- Go back to the browser window. Move your mouse so the arrow
is on the picture. It doesn't matter where, as long as it is on the
picture. [Students perform task.]
- Click and hold your mouse button. A small window should
appear on top of the picture. Raise your hand if you see this. [Check
and assist.]
- Move your arrow to the words, "Copy Image" and let go of
the button. [Students perform task.]
- Go back to your Inspiration document and find the word
"Edit" at the top of your screen. Click and hold your mouse button
on "Edit". Move the arrow down to the word "Paste". let go of the
button. What happened? [Target answer: The picture appeared on the
Inspiration page.]
- You have just learned to copy and paste text and pictures
from the Internet into your own document. Now you are going to practice
this new skill.
- Activity: Have students use links on the picture book page
to find three more pictures and descriptions. Have them paste the
text and picture of each web page into the Inspiration document. circulate
and monitor students, assisting when necessary. At the end of the
activity have students share their results.
- We are almost finished. You have worked hard on creating
your new documents. We want to save them. Go to the "File" menu at
the to of your screen. Click and hold your mouse button. Move the
arrow to the word "save" and let go, You should now have a small window
in the middle of your screen. Raise your hand if you do. [Check and
assist.]
- You will notice that there is a small blue window within
this new window. Anything you type now will appear in this window.
Lets call this document "Copy and paste". Type those words. They should
appear in the small window. Raise your hand if they do. [Check and
assist.]
- At the top of the small window is another small window
that has arrows pointing up and down. raise your hand if you see it.
[Check and assist.] Move your mouse so the arrow is over this small
window. click and hold your mouse button. [Students perform task.]
Move your arrow to the word "Desktop". let go of the button. the small
window should now say "Desktop". Raise your hand if it does. [Check
and assist.]
- Now click the button that says "Save". [Students perform
task.] Close all your windows. [Students perform task.]
- Now look on your computer screen. You should see an icon
for the document you just saved. Raise your hand if you see it. [Check
and assist.] Double-click the icon. [Students perform task.] You should
now have the Inspiration document you just saved on your screen. Raise
your hand if you do. [Check and assist.]
