1. Today we're going to learn about some of the extra things that have been added to Opal's diary to make it more interesting and enjoyable to read. The web site has many pictures and a map of Opal's world so that you can get a better picture of what her life was like. We are going to learn how to get to these maps and pictures.
   
2. Open your browsers and go to the first page of Opal's diary. [Students perform task.]
   
3. It's my turn. I'm going to look at the picture gallery. Watch what I do. [Teacher performs these tasks while describing them.] First I scroll down the page until I come to the boxes with the links. Then I select the link that says "Picture Book". I click that link and I now have a page that has a lot of pictures and links.
   
4. Now it's your turn. Go down the page to the Picture Book" link. then use the link to go to the pictures. [Students perform task.] If you are on the right page it will say "read about Opal's one-room schoolhouse" near the top. raise your hand if that's what you see. [Check and assist.]
   
   
5. Let's look at some pictures. Go to the first link. It says "See Opal's Walden School". Click the link. [Students perform task. Note: On older computers it may take a few seconds for a picture to load.] This is a picture of Opal's school. Let's find out about it. [Have students read caption.]
   
6. Now look just below what we just read. What are the next two lines? [Target answer: Links.] These two lines are links. Let's click on the first link, the one for Paragraph 6. [Students perform task.] Raise your hand if the page you are on says, "the road to the schoolhouse." [Check and assist.] Let's read what it says. [Have students read passage.]
   
7. You not only get to see pictures of the people and place in Opal's life, but you can use the links in the picture pages to find passages in Opal's diary that talk about those people and places. Now let's have some fun. Go back to the first page of the diary. To do this you push the "Back" button two times.
   
8. Activity: Assign each student a link on the picture book index page. Have students go to the page with that picture, then use the links on that page to find out more about the character or place in the picture. Have each student share what she/he found out abut the picture.
   
   
9. Use your "Back" button to go to the first page of the diary. [Students perform task.] Now we're going to learn about the map of Opal's world. Scroll down the page until you come to the boxes of links. Then find the link that says "Map". Raise your hand when you see it. [Check and assist.] Click the link. You should now be on a page called "Map of Opal's world". Raise your hand if that's what you see. [Check and assist.]
   
10. At the center of the map is Opal's house. Raise your hand if you see it. [Check and assist.] Move your mouse so the arrow is over Opal's house. What happens to the arrow? [target answer: It turns into a hand.] What does it mean when the arrow changes to a hand? [Target answer: You have found a link.] Opal's house is a link. Let's click it and see where it takes us[ Teacher and students perform task.]
    
11. What happened when you clicked the link? [Target answer: A new window opened.] this is a special kind of link that opens the page in another window. Move your mouse so the arrow is over the "Back" button. [Students perform task.] What happens to the arrow? [Target answer: Nothing.] the arrow did not change. the "Back" and "Forward" buttons are only links when you have looked at more than one page in a window. Since we have only had one page in this window they don't become links.
    
12. Let's find out about Opal's house. [Have students read description.]
    
13. Now look at the links below what we just read. the first link says "Picture." Let's take a look. Click the link. [Students perform task.] this is a picture that was taken from an airplane. It shows the area Opal lived in the way it looks today. Let's read what it says. [Have students read caption.]
    
14. You can use the links on the map just like you used the links on the picture pages to learn more about Opal's world. let's have some fun with the map now. Close the window we just finished looking at. Be careful not to close the window with the map. raise your hand if you see the map on your computer. [Check and assist.]
    
15. Activity: Repeat the activity in VIII above, but assign links from the map for students to investigate.
