[Note: This lesson is based on the assumption that the students will be working with the Internet Explorer browser application. However, the same procedures described here will also work with the Netscape navigator browser. The teacher should set up the classroom so that students can see the teacher's computer screen as well as what the teacher is doing.]
  1. Today we're going to begin learning about a new kind of book. What do you think of when you think of books? [Accept reasonable answers.]
  2. Normally when we think of books we think of words on paper.
  3. The kind of book we're going to learn about today is called electronic text. electronic text means that the writing is on a computer instead of on paper.
  4. The first thing we need to learn is how to actually open our electronic book. Anytime we are opening up something on a computer we call it opening a document. if you look at your computer screen you will see several items with names under them. these are called icons. Find the icon that says Internet Explorer. Raise your hand when you see it. [Teacher checks and assists.] Internet explorer is what we call a browser. It allows us to go anywhere on the Internet.
  5. It's my turn. I want to open up Netscape Navigator. I use my mouse to place the arrow on the icon. [Teacher performs task.] Now I do what is called double clicking. This means I am going to push the button on my mouse two times very fast. [Teacher performs task.]
  6. Now it's your turn. Move your arrow over the icon for Internet explorer and open it. if you do it correctly your computer screen will look just like mine. [Students perform task. Teacher checks and assists.]
  7. The electronic texts that we will be using are on the Internet. Any time you want to get on the Internet you begin by opening your browser.
  8. Now you're going to close your browser. to do this you need to find a mall "button" in the upper left corner of the window on your screen. Raise your hand if you see this button. [Teacher checks and assists.]
  9. Now you're going to practice opening and closing your browser. Remember, to open you double-click on the browser icon. To close the browser you click on the little button in the top left corner. it's your turn. Practice opening and closing your browser. [teacher circulates, monitoring students and assisting where necessary.]
  10. Now we're going to have our first look at electronic text. Open your browser. [Students perform task.] The page you see on your screen when you open your browser is called the default page. raise your hand if what you see on your computer is the same as what you see on mine. [Check and assist.]
  11. Now look near the top of the page. You will see a long, narrow white space about an inch below the top of your window. there will be some letters and symbols in this space. raise your hand if you see this space. [check and assist.] This is called the address bar. In order to go someplace on the Internet you will type the address of the place you want to go in the address bar.
  12. It's my turn. I'm going to type an address into the address bar. Watch what I do. [Teacher performs task. Type in this address: http://intersect.uoregon.edu/opal/default.html ] Now I hit the "Return " key on my keyboard. [teacher performs task.]
  13. I now have the first page of an electronic text on my computer. This book is called The Diary of Opal Whiteley. This is the book we will be using to learn about electronic text.
  14. Now it's your turn. Follow along and do what I do. Move your mouse so the arrow is over the address bar. [Students perform task.] Click your mouse button once. The address bar should now be blue. Raise your hand if that's what you see. [Check and assist.]
  15. There is one very important thing you must remember when typing in an address. If you make even the smallest mistake, if just one letter or symbol is wrong, you will not get to the page you wish to view. Always be sure that you are typing the address correctly. Always double check to make sure before you hit the "Return" key.
  16. make sure the address bar is blue. Click on it once if it isn't. Now type this address into the address bar. [Write this address on the board: http://intersect.uoregon.edu/opal/default.html ] Raise your hand when you have typed in the address. [Check and assist.]
  17. Now that you are sure you have the correct address, hit your "Return" button. [Students perform task.]
  18. Everyone should now have a page on your screen that says The Diary of Opal Whiteley. Raise your hand if that's what you have. [Check and assist.] We will be working with Opal's dairy in the weeks ahead. What you have just learned is what you will always do to get to the diary.
  19. Now you're going to practice. Close your browser, open it up again, and go to the first page of Opal's diary. try it several times. I will come around and see how you are doing. [Students practice while teacher circulates and monitors.]
