Opal's Mysterious Angel Mother
Possible picture of Opal and her grandmother Whiteley

Possible picture of Opal and her grandmother Whiteley

Opal believed that she was adopted and that her real mother was dead. Opal's Angel Mother teachers her many things about nature and songs to sing. The true identity - or existence of "Angel Mother" is unknown.

We believe the photograph above shows Opal and her grandmother Whiteley in Colton, Washington. We cannot be certain of this, but the landscape looks much like the farm they lived on before moving to Oregon in 1903.

However, Opal herself always said that she did not live in Colton Washington as a child. She believed that she was adopted to take the place of another child named Opal who died very young. Perhaps this is a photo of the original Opal Whiteley.
