Opal dressed as an Indian guide
Opal Whiteley at age 16 or 17

Picture of Opal dressed as an indian guide

Opal does not write about Indians in her childhood diary - although the area around her home once held a large Indian village. Opal's dark skin may be from Indian blood in her family.

By the time Opal became a teenager she had a developed lifelong love for Indian culture. Her writings about nature and spirit draw heavily from Native American ideas.
