 Managing
Windows
The
Digital Library has been designed for a multi-window environment, butcan
also be used for single-window navigation if preferred. There are three
categories of materials that work together, whether they are side by side,
as in a multi-window setup, or in succession, as in a single window setup.
Select
a book by clicking on its link in the Digital Library Index page. It will
load a Title Page or Table of Contents in your first window (or if you
are using a single window, your only window).
Using
Multiple Windows
The
Title Page generally
functions as a Table of Contents, and provides links into the book at
several main entry points. The most important entry point for the first-time
reader is the first page. You may also choose to view collections of supportive
resources such as PictureBooks, Maps, and Timelines. Just like a book,
each collection of resources may be paged through or searched.
The
Title Page also provides selections for the amount of text that will appear
on a page at a time. The default page length is only a few screens long,
but other page lengths are available to choose from, such as single paragraphs
(short length), passages (medium length), and chapters (long length).
Step
1:
Start Reading.
Most first time readers will begin reading on the first page in the first
chapter. Clicking the "Start Reading" link will load the first
page in the Primary Text window (Window #1 above).This is the Reading
Window where you may page forward or back through the book.
Step
2:
Click on a Resource Link.
Underlined words in the text of the book are links to resources. Resources
are available to enhance your understanding of the text with things such
as definitions, explanations, pictures, and maps. In the multiple window
system, these links should be opened in a new window (Window #2
above).
Opening
a New Window
Macintosh: To open a new window, simply hold the mouse button down on
the link until a drop-down menu appears, then select "Open in New Window."
Windows:
Right-click the link and select "Open Link in New Window" from the drop-down
menu.
The
new window will open and load the Resource Index for the page, with
the word you selected at the top of the window. Resize and move the
window into the position shown above, #2 Resource Index.
Step
3:
Click on a Resource Display Link.
Now read the Resource Index entry for the word you selected. If there
are additional resources, they will appear as underlined links below the
text. To open oen of these in a third window, repeat the process in Step
2, but size and move the third window into the position of #3 Resource
Display, shown above.
Drag and Drop Links
Once three windows are open on the screen, you can determine which window
a given link opens in by dragging and dropping the link from one window
over to the target window. You can keep organized by only dragging links
from Window #1 to #2, and from #2 to #3.
