Searching The Constitution

Search the Constitution by typing the key words you want to find into this search box

Then click the "Search" button:

You don't have to come to this page to do your searching.
Just about every page of the Constitution has a Search Box like this one.

Tips for searching:

1. A search gives you a list of all the clauses from the Constitution containing the words you searched for, along with links to those sections and clauses in the Constitution itself.

2. If you type two words into the search box, you will find paragraphs containing BOTH words but NOT necessarily with the words TOGETHER For example, searching for "Consent of Congress" using quotes will give you just one clause:

No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay. (Article - 1 - Section - 10 - Clause - 2)

But, if you search for Consent of Congress without using quotes, you find 8 clauses. They all contain the word "Consent" and the word "Congress" and even "of," but not all together as a phrase

:Neither House, during the Session of Congress, shall, without the Consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other Place than that in which the two Houses shall be sitting. (Article - 1 - Section - 5 - Clause - 4)

3. Once you have the results of your search, you can search again for other words WITHIN THOSE SECTIONS of the Constitution by using the Search BUTTON of your WEB BROWSER. In fact, you can do this on ANY webpage.
