About Project INTERSECT

  The inability of many students with disabilities to comprehend the text materials assigned by general education teachers has a negative impact on their literacy skills, their abilities to succeed in general education courses, and their abilities to perform successfully on tests reflecting local, state or national curriculum standards.

  To assist these students, Project INTERSECT is creating a set of digital books, available to be read via the Internet. These books are enfused with a wide variety of resources to support comprehension, extend reading strategies, provide background information, improve content area achievement, and to help students meet state standards.

  The major product resulting from Project INTERSECT is a website with three major components:

1. A Digital Library with prototype texts and textbooks;
   
   
2. A Teacher Center with instructional materials, lesson plans, document descriptions, ideas and suggestions to help teachers integrate these digital books into their classrooms; and
   
   
3. Developer's Guidelines providing teachers and other curriculum developers with the tools and templates they need to modify and/or create additional web-based texts compatible with the specifications of materials already in the Digital Library.
